Acer Aspire 5105WLMi

Introduction
Why, where and requirements.
For my training, it was advisable to purchase a laptop. It was not immediately demands from school. I myself had a few: It was around the 15.4 "screen have a drive with 5400RPM and preferably a (modest) dedicated video card Thankfully this was after not look far to find in my own city ComputerLand had in October.. 2007 a beautiful Acer Aspire 5105WLMi for a reasonable amount of 800, - Euro.

Content & Specs
What's in the box and what are the specs.
Processor: AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60 (2 * 2GHz)
Memory: 1GB DDR2 667Mhz * 2 (2 of 2 slots filled)
HDD: WD Scorpion 160GB S-ATA 5400RPM
Video Card: ATI Radeon X1300 M52 (128mb dedicated and expandable memory)
Screen: 15.4 inch 1280x800 with a 16:9 ratio
Optical: DVD-RW burner (not sure if any speed)
Battery: 6-cell 4000mAh
Furthermore, you get the standard stuff:. Adapter (90 watt), a manual and some useless wires First run crap Vista - Windows XP - Driver Installation Full of anticipation, I put the laptop for the first time. But I soon found out that nothing was pre-installed. Yay what fun .... Fortunately, I had no choice for this and I had to go through the entire installation. That was very annoying. Finally took to get. Complete installation including Norton and brackish Empowering crap installed the 1.5 hour Fortunately I am in possession of a genuine Windows XP license. And the first thing I did when I was 'in' Vista was the laptop reboot and start the installation of Windows XP. Installing Windows XP was a short and spotless. Then I have already downloaded the drivers for Windows XP on another computer. These are simple and easy to download from the website of Acer and are also required to exotic hardware to install. I deliberately choose Windows XP because I see no value in Windows Vista. (Here I will later in the story to come back)

Performance
Overall performance - game presetaties - bottlenecks
The laptop has basically no wrong specifications. (See attached picture below for the original Vista Performance Index). 2GHz dual core processor running along nicely, and 2gb DDR2 is sufficient for the programs that I use. Furthermore, the x1300 a "decent" video card that can handle quite a bit. All though it is seen a low-end graphics card Battlefield 2 could still be in with a resolution of 1280 * 800 with medium settings. Even games with the Source engine, such as Insurgency I can at the highest resolution with everything running at medium / high.
The overall specs are for this amount whatsoever to call out well. The drive, a 5400RPM S-ATA drive from Western Digital in this case is therefore the bottleneck. The speed can be called a laptop, pretty normal but this can easily be increased to a 7200RPM drive
this than I did. A few months ago I have a Hitachi Travelstar 200GB S-ATA disk purchased some work to do 7200RPM with 16MB cache. Here I also installed Windows XP. You really notice a marked performance difference. It's just brilliant to mention! Windows starts much faster and also programs and heavy operations go a lot quicker.

Bouwkwaliteit
quality, workmanship, material.
Aspire series should not have quality, but rather competitive prices. If you want to go for a better quality you can Travelmate or take a completely different brand like Asus or Apple. This Aspire is quite reasonable finish. The casing is made of plastic, all though it all feels solid. The built-in left and right mouse feels pretty cheapo to. And when you use it, you hear a clear (and in my opinion annoying) click. Heat and noise Heat idle / stressed. Noise. The laptop makes almost no noise. Even with active disk usage you hear very little. After replacing the drive for a 200gb copy this was fortunately not much else. Only the heat is on the high side. It is not necessarily annoying lap to work with this laptop, but you notice that it is quite warm. It is wise to turn when you are going to work with it so that the heat can escape. This laptop on a flat surface The video card and processor are in my opinion not hot, just the area where the memory and HDD's are pretty hot. The new HDD, this idea has been stepped up. All in all, the heat is acceptable. mobility and battery life length during office work and at play. Here the problems begin. After purchasing this laptop I noticed immediately that all the battery life is very limited. After some testing, I found that I had during office conditions can do. maximum of 50 minutes with a load cycle This is, if you compare it with a standard laptop, below par. I expected at least 1.5 hours. And if you look at the factory specs you see a mobility period of 2.5 hours. The length is further shortened if one is going to play a game. Battlefield 2 (right to just take the extreme) I can play up to 30 minutes before the laptop fails. A co-5105WLMI user has this problem also recognizes and has his laptop returned. For this, he has a 4800mAh version got back (original is a 4000mAh) where he mentions that the battery life has become better. Problems In line with the battery story: I have the laptop is not returned directly because I do indeed have needed him for school . Most classrooms have also called on a socket, so the problem was not so great. But after four months, the screen started to have problems. On the right, I had a light blue vertical stripe, about 2 pixels wide. This was immediately visible when you start the laptop. After some fooling around with the drivers, I found out that this problem was not software but hardware. I could not because the screen (very carefully) to the right, to get back to get the picture. "Right" Here I sat with it until I was on holiday and did not have to use the laptop. Daily for about a week I called Acer and passed what was my problem screen. I also have battery problems passed. Everything was neatly arranged quickly. I got an RMA number and a UPS number that I could call UPS itself to be picked up. Device on This was the same day, at the end of the afternoon. Two days later I received a morning text from Acer (!) Stating that they had received the laptop and were busy repairing. Very well, if I say so myself. At the end of the afternoon I received a text message containing the message that the product was repaired and returned again. The next day I had the laptop at home already. Super! There was a description by stating that they had replaced. The screen and the battery Very happy as I was, I again continued my work. However, after two weeks, I got even bigger problems. The screen began to shake like crazy, the text could not be read. You can compare it to about 10 mobile phones that are all on the phone next to a CRT screen. This was not so common and usually lasted up to 10 seconds. In the course of time this problem was bigger and more common ... Well, again called Acer, same story came back. Laptop is returned within 5 days and I had him in the house again, superb! I thought ... was this time in the product description: "Recovery disc rotated Vista restored." As described previously, I used from the outset Windows XP. Very annoying. While the laptop for repair was gone, I had already ordered the new hard drive. The original disc removed and the new ones again put Windows XP on it (I'm stubborn), and after one week hit .. I gave Acer a fair chance, and I put the original drive with the original operating system on it. Here I have also worked for a week and then it was hit again! Only now a bit worse. It came after every reboot and lasted for some 10 minutes. The image was projected three times, among themselves, and the vibration was unprecedented. I had the laptop when really necessary, so I put the new hard drive it done here and put Windows Vista on it with no original drivers. Again, this was to no avail. The problem was prominent, and anyway it was called when I even somewhat of a game turn. Update 09-04-2008: After almost three weeks, I have my laptop back with a replacement motherboard. Apparently there were parts come from Germany or something. It does not matter, I got him back. Hopefully he keeps it much longer! Update 08-10-2008: After the last update the laptop running like a charm. Further, no more problems with flickering screens. The battery life is approximately 1h under office conditions. This is still, in my experience, very little, but just do it. Update 09-09-2009: After almost two years since the last issue laptop running problem free. Vista has meanwhile been back on after the beta of Windows 7 replaced. There now been running for a few months Windows 7 (7100) on. Installation went within 15 minutes and all (!) Drivers were automatically detected and installed. Conclusion It is a nice laptop which certainly gives good office performance. Using a faster hard drive you are assured of desktop performance. The mobility is very limited, this is definitely a downside. In addition, other problems of course, no positive effect on the whole picture. But if you think away the problems is that for me anyway, the ideal laptop for the money
