the market for netbooks at the time of writing immensely to the trees, the hype surrounding the small ultraportable laptops does not seem to stop. The main manufacturers Acer, Asus and MSI see natural bread and jobs on their own way towards the masses. Thus, the Acer Aspire One with a screen size of 9 inches has developed an inexpensive solution to the public from the low-budget segment, MSI follows this concept with the Wind U100. Both models will not exceed 400 euros, for that matter, these netbooks also the trendsetters of the downward price line. Manufacturers do not deviate too much from the current success formula for netbooks, namely the combination of low weight, high battery life, small size and low price.
Very obstinate attempts Asus with the introduction of the Eee S101 in a very different way. The Eee PC S101 was developed initially as a high-end "ultimate" model throughout the Eee PC series. This idea has led to much confusion. There were a lot to ask, so they asked themselves why Asus turns away from the original essence of the Eee PC. The slogan of the Eee PC is "Easy to learn, Easy to work, Easy to play". Under this motto, the netbooks would be sold for less than 400 euros. So the S101 is quite different from the norm, originally this model would be launched under the ZX series. A 12-inch model from the ZX series shows other still pending. A release before 2009 was the intention.
Ideas for choosing
A while ago I had planned to buy a laptop. As I was going to ask (ultra-portable, high-end segment, 10.2 or 12 inches, fast) more demands the S101 came as a potential winner. The sleek impression left on the S101 images and videos seized me as love at first sight. I have the S101 since day to day monitored, and over time it became clear to me that I went on to the final stage, namely the purchase of such equipment.
These words were translated into action in early December. I have the brown version of the Eee S101 purchased at Central Point Ltd. at a price of 560 euros excl. I also have a 2GB memory upgrade ordered from a shop in England. After two days, the DHL van arrived with a big box. In this box was a lot of bubble wrap and even a box, the black box. Finally I had the S101 in my hands, and could use him. The review I originally wanted to do after the 2GB kit would arrive, it takes too long to this day, I make it so an update. First impression
The first aspect that stands out on the Eee S101 are the looks. The sleek looks of the S101 are in fact a true feast for the eyes. If the S101 has closed the thing covered by a shiny brown piano, which looks stunning, if you regularly wipe away the dust with the equally brown colored cloth. Asus S101 with very light on detail, and - given the ultimate title - allows the S101 to excel above all other netbooks. The Eee S101 is even so luxurious that it can almost be considered a piece of jewelry. My S101 has a number of trips by public transport to sit, and the number of people staring - for example in the train - is quite high.: D

The silver strips give a luxurious impression
With brown piano gloss S101 is a beautiful appearance in the living room
With an eye for detail Asus has different physical features added, which provide the necessary bling-bling. So Asus has subtly tiny crystals implemented at both ends of the hinge. Perhaps the beautiful design known as the cornerstone of the S101. The glossy frame around the 10.2 inch screen looks neat, and is not as thick as the Eee 901 and 1000. Asus puts silver accent on the edges and finishes, which looks nice. A look under the hood provides the Asus Eee PC S101 with a single-core Atom N270 processor, quite usual for a netbook. At the moment no clear plans in anticipation of what is a dual-core Atom for netbooks. It will therefore not surprise many readers that the S101 does not do anything special in the field of data encryption and other CPU tasks. The S101 is equipped with 1GB of internal memory which, together with the Atom processor, Intel 945 GSE houses on a motherboard. The GSE 945 has an embedded graphics driver called GMA 950, and has a TDP of 16W is not very efficient. Has Asus then added nothing new under the hood? Incorrect, as the SSD is seen here on the head. Where the MSI Wind, Samsung NC10, the Acer Aspire One and vice versa using a conventional HDD, the Eee S101 comes with a Solid State Disk. This also explains why the same price is a lot higher. The SSD has a capacity of 16GB, is quiet and performs exceptionally well. More on this later (read: On the test bench). The 10.2-inch widescreen looks sharp, the colors seem saturated, but not always faithfully. In the area of other external features, the S101 also has three USB ports, 807.11n wireless network adapter, 100/1000 Gigabit LAN connection, VGA connector and a 1.3MP webcam. Only thing missing for a netbook of this caliber may be a 3G connectivity. Asus Eee S101 on the dyno As mentioned there are not impressive things under the hood of the S101. For 600 euros you will also get a standard Atom processor, while other netbooks with similar price - such as the Asus N10J - have to offer more. To compare the performances I've used several benchmarks including the usual PC Mark 2005 and HD Tune. In addition, I have three games tested with fraps, namely Age of Empires II: The Conquerors, NFS:. Underground 2 and Far Cry All benchmarks are generated incidentally in the super-performance mode, 1.7GHz. A caveat should be made relating to multithreading performance. Because I have multiple installations running simultaneously, which could handle the S101. Still fine

Benchmark 1: SuperPI
To develop in the areas of performance, a broad perspective, I also tested the various components separately. Here I started with the Atom processor. To test the Atom I SuperPI and PC Mark used, although the CPU also influences other benchmarks.
SuperPI allows the processor a number with x number of digits after the decimal point calculation. The rate at which this occurs varies from a few seconds to minutes, depending on the number to calculate.
, the most common number is 1M, or 1 million decimal places. Here is the result of SuperPI benchmark running on my S101, which is more than necessary for the 1M test one minute.
Benchmark 2: HD Tune 3:10
With HD Tune is the minimum, maximum and average throughput is calculated from a HDD or SSD. For the test I have read achieved two results. The results achieved in the super-performance mode is on average 70 MB / sec for reading. However, in Power saving mode I get speeds above 90 MB / Sec. This difference is due to the known bug, where a higher score HD Tune is taken as the Eee PC is in Power Saving mode.
It is a general that the SSD is considerably slower as more pressure is put on the data capacity. I did my tests achieved with about 8.5GB of available space, or 55%. The actual scores could therefore be a lot higher and so different from my result. Measured in the power saving mode, the S101 takes an average of 50 MB / sec over a conventional HDD from an Eee 1000, and an average of 30 MB / sec over a WD Raptor 74GB. Here is where users find the Eee a page 1000 their HD Tune scores have uploaded. The scores of the Eee 1000, the forerunner of the S101 range from an average of 35 MB / sec (standard 80GB HDD) to 50 MB / Sec (250GB HDD). HD Tune benchmark performed on a 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F1 resulting in a reading score an average of 115 MB / Sec, the SSD is in the S101 thus performs very well relative. Altogether lends the S101 with the fast SSD is good for loading data, which has its major contribution during the startup of Windows XP (for use after <30 seconds). Benchmark 3: PC Mark 2005 In order to achieve an all-round score for the system as a whole, I have used PC Mark 05. On the internet I came across some of the results of such a benchmark against. First Hardware.info the S101 has been tested, and came out at 1450 CPU marks, 1843 marks memory and HD 8880 marks. Register Hardware came to similar results for the CPU, however, knew RegHardware 500 to pick out the S101 and more memory marks HD 600 less marks. Both HWI as RegHardware have no system score indicated.
My own benchmark resulted in scores ranging from 1695 to 1774 PC marks. I realized - with my only registered benchmark - 1475 CPU marks, 2127 marks memory, a graphics score of about 550 and a HD score of 7800. I will make an update when there are better scores.
approximately 1,700 PC marks the S101 is still more than 200-300 points for other Eee's. Benchmark 4: Age of Empires II: The Conquerors This RTS is already ten years old but still a popular name among AoE fans. The game is very heavy for its time (CPU-limited) and is playable on a netbook la Eee S101. Given fraps no relevant score can display (300/400/500 FPS on avg. Seems excessive to me) I will tell you in my own words if it is running or not. The game runs smoothly at 800x600 resolution and high settings. I tested this by starting with five men. Multiplayer game Even with the whole map explored and average 150x5 units in total running the game almost without shock or lag. Benchmark 5: Need for Speed: Underground 2 This game is considerably less on the Eee S101 and GMA 950 graphics driver is clearly the bottleneck. The game is playable when not being driven in areas with lots of rendered objects or many cars. The embedded graphics driver features dynamically - assigned by RAM - memory, I suspect, as the internal memory upgrade from 1GB to 2GB, more memory will be allocated so that the S101 will produce more fps. Incidentally, I have a number of software tweaks within the GMA 950 driver raise the fps in NFS: U2. I also have a special 3D emulator uses. The game is playable, but not smooth. As for Far Cry basically the same principle, the more objects, so goes the lower the fps. Bouwkwaliteit & Ergonomics The Eee S101 feels very sturdy and smooth to. The latter is because the body is polished aluminum. When the screen is folded, the two hinges move smoothly along, without cracking or impact. The silvery metal strips forming a solid finish, and look like eye-candy. . A big advantage is that the netbook is so small, making it firmly in the hands (or even a hand) is to hold. Incidentally, the S101 happily withstand significant abuse, partly because there is an SSD (solid / solid). Another aspect to the high build quality is the keyboard, which is 90% represents a full sized keyboard. As shown in the following picture, the margins between the keys are very small so there is little dust inside. The keys feel well, and come with shimmer. The touchpad is nice and soft and sleek. Also on ergonomic field throws the S101 again high eyes.
Here slips no drop of water in between ..
Heat and noise:
The netbook is never hot, and blows (almost) never. The product feels warm hand, and measured temperatures from speedfan confirm this. The Atom processor with a TDP of 4W mean that it is safe. All parts saves energy, as also in the storage opting for an SSD (no rotating platters that produce a lot of heat). Noise from the S101 is approaching zero, the only audible is the Realtek HD audio speakers, their work also do well when playing streaming media such as youtube.
under load the CPU and chipset no warmer than 10 degrees ~
Mobility & Battery life:
The Eee S101 weighs 1.05 kg including battery, so nice and light. This low weight combined with small size, including a width of 26.5 cm, a depth of 18.3 cm and a height of 2.4 cm form the ideal composition for an ultraportable. Unlike 99% of other laptops, the S101 hold "on the fly while you control the touchpad with the other hand. 1 firm hand The thing also can easily be taken on the train, in the car, or even on the bike (not tested, but it is theoretically possible : +). So you can go after the S101 really go is taken, not for utility, but because "he's just so beautiful. Everywhere (this is hardly debatable ;)). The supplied battery is approximately 4 to 5 hours with the high-performance mode. I often use the super-peformance mode so I have to do 3 to 4 hours. The charging of the battery is very small in comparison and is more reminiscent of a charger of a mobile phone / PDA. Asus provides the S101 includes a brown bag / case with a soft cloth and a cleaning cloth. The cleaning cloth should in fact be used very often because after intensive use many fingerprints seen on the S101, it also attracts a lot of dust.

What you pay for ...
a suggested retail price of 600 euros for a netbook รณ seems to be so expensive, but it must be put into perspective. The included SSD is almost as fast as a WD Raptor 74GB in Raid0 setup, according to an external test, which costs almost 300 euros. The graphical finery and tightness of the S101 are of unprecedented quality, which allows the S101 really stick out above the rest of the netbooks. The finish, build quality and size are of a totally different level as other netbooks in the Eee series. The Eee S101 as a product essentially looks much more like the priceless Sony Vaio, which, although faster, but not nearly as portable. Is the S101 really pay for quality, so I think a price of 550-600 euros very profitable. Verdict: The S101 does his' ultimate' predicate real honor, and exudes all the characteristics of a quality product. The priceless beautiful looks of the thing, combined with excellent performance of the SSD, a solid finish and build quality, phenomenal small size, ergonomically designed keyboard, heat and noise which almost nothing and high mobility make the S101 the best netbook that up to now has been launched. The essence of the S101 is that netbooks are not designed only for the low-budget segment and the simple user, but also for the businessman with fashion sense. This thing just does everything I want it, and do it better and faster than other netbooks like the MSI Wind, which is why the S101 has become my choice. * I will in due course make an update when I have upgegrade of internal memory 1GB to 2GB, which hopefully will result in performance for games that demand more of the embedded graphics card profits
