INTRODUCTION
First I want to mention that I am familiar with the attitude that tweakers generally against my employer (ie Dixons) and my brand laptop (Packard Bell Packard aka Hell) have. Both are not really as positive factors in a given tweakers life (rather, they are both worth avoiding). Still, I want my fellow tweakers this review is not remembered, I saw still something positive experiences with this brand like items (I will not talk about the quality of my employer, being out of my mouth subjective information). Since I as a third year student of tax law Erasmus University Rotterdam looked down, more and more fellow students with a laptop and heard the stories about how fine a thing it was not sheats etc, I decided at one point, but once my eyes open and keep some money commitment to buy a not too expensive machine that I could do much with it aside. I wanted to do like a Centrino machine (given the sockets on the EUR very sparse and a little decent video card (at least not Intregrated Intel thing or something). Also a little fun screen and a little storage space (no 40GB or so ) was a requirement. Otherwise the thing had to look a little fun and lend themselves to mod or tweakability. The laptops that met these requirements were more than 1000 euros and that I had not (I am after-all student) , and I was not planning to have to start giving out considering I was standing. been a very nice desktop AND WHEN I popped the Packard Bell R8720 against the laptop display from my store, an older model, from a Another branch came, had been a display model, had been standing (without battery), and there were two tiny scratches on the screen., I immediately found nice to him I had the model to admire. never before in my showcase The little machine was beautiful black (also the setting of the keyboard, etc.) as opposed to the cheaper models PB, and had a standard TV tuner PC card, an infrared receiver with remote control, a Pentium M 725 1.6 GHz FSB 400MHz, 512MB RAM, an ATi Mobile 9700 64MB video card and a 60GB HDD (4200 RPM 2MB cache thought would not be so much the opposite would appear). All this in combination with a 15.4-inch 1280 by 800 widescreen diamond view (some Sony-mirror screen, only with backlight 1), a weight of 2.8 kg, a 6-cell 4000 Mah 11.1 volt battery (makes 45 watts with me), a very compact charger, a NEC 6500A DVD burner (24x24x8x4x2.4DL if I am not mistaken), a 4-in-one card reader (CF Unfortunately no, what my IXUS'je used) and enough connections (TV out, monitor out, three times USB 2.0, 56k modem, 10/100 Ethernet, mini-firewire, and sound). All this for a price of 996 customer pasteurized. I found that a bit much for an old "showroom" model (with accompanying signs of use), so I went into conclave with my manager, and the proposal was 850 euro including tight Targus notebook bag worth 50 euros (I still need enough lugged would be going with the thing). I had my reservations about the brand (I often have to perform for a customer that no service received from PB so I Dealer line went once again to call and once again had to make what I wanted from PB clear enough little war), but I liked it so a nice little machine and such a nice low price that I've only just brought him the same day I saw him (impulse purchase). Until the day of not regretted today. featureset AND PERFORMANCE And now the real work review. Intel Pentium M Dothan 1.6GHz combined with an Intel 855 chipset has been a much discussed combination, it works quickly sat back like clocks, supplies for my stuff (browsing, Powerpoint, Word, MP3, gaming some editing and tweaking) enough power. I did not get the impression that the processor lets you know the things that I let him do it off. Everything was going smoothly, and I'm not annoyed me about that it could in processor area. Faster My desktop processor (a 2.6GHz 800MHz FSB 512KB Northwood@3.25) feels rapper if you have multiple things open at once stand or want to open (that is, the HyperThreading), but it is not distracting. About Micron 512MB PC 2700 @ 2.5-3-3.8 (2 times 256) is also to report. much exciting The memory is when Windows is idle responsible for about 45% (220MB), but is the one thing I do it enough. 2 times 256 is expanding too expensive, but often!'s Just like my desktop to 1024MB. It is now no need for me, the machine runs smoothly enough without having to make use of the swap file. GRAPHICS ATI 9700 64 MB is a card that runs at 445 GPU and 245 (DDR 490) MEM default. To retrieve the little machine with detonator drivers 5.7 3200 3d marks 2003 (the drivers that there OJ supplies are hopelessly outdated, newer version 4.6 are not to be found on the website, the thing gets it in 2730). Overclocked (510 GPU and 255 (DDR510) MEM) I get there about 3750 3d marks 2003 with. All without artifacts without excessive heat after a few hours of GTA SA and as stable as a rock. You may be wondering what the point is of OC'n a laptop video card, but I think it can, a bonus, why not? If things doorfikt I see it (is indeed never happened to me with anything, I'm a conservative tweaker). The OC is indeed not the max of the card, I have the ATI Tray Tools 530 GPU and 525 MEM been stable, but that was the max Mhz'je was more artifacts and crashjes during benching. Altogether 3750 not a bad score for my little system,'m pretty happy with it. In fact, I use the OC only for certain games, and in moderation (a melted laptop looks so bad off). I have the external monitor and TV out not tested, I let you know when I do. HDD The HDD 60 Gieg proved a disaster. Upon further investigation (this was not reflected in the PB-site) appeared to be a 4200 RPM 2MB cache Hitachi slice to go. Slowly fucking bitch! Peak 19 mb, 13 mb valley, 22 ms access time, burst rate of 37MB HD Tune is what is said about it. Windows boot in 1.5 minutes, incredibly slow, installing larger programs hell in short, that after three days, replaced by a WD600VE Skorpio, 60 5400 rpm 8mb cache Gieg disc (like a fresh windows install done with the recovery disc, PB without the mess), and voila, opstartijd halved, install and copy much faster, and just the feeling that you're working with something decent (I'm used to my raptor). Cost me 89 euros. 27 mb peak, 19 mb valley, 17.3 ms access time, burst rate 83 mb. Worth the money. The old disc serves as a Sharkoon USB HDD casing 18 euros, works like a charm, had a lot of fun, no additional power supply needed to have.BURNER AND SOFTWARE About the writer I can be brief: the thing does its job just good and fast (I burn not many DVDs). Standard I fucking writer stand out, which saves power again. The included software does the job but is 80% completely useless and obsolete. In contrast, the Power Cinema software is fine to use with the remote, and not much different from Windows XP Media Centre. Also, the included TV tuner card does its job, choose channels and is easy to operate, even though I have that feature only once a fifteen tested. Also included is far default Word 2002 and 3 months Norton Internet Security, I've replaced it in my much less resource-hungry McAfee Internet Security 9 soon (and Word from Office 2003 PE). On the outputs and inputs I can be short: working properly. I have a CF reader into the PC card slot stopped to still be able to read my CF cards from my IXUS'je and working properly. Nothing special. The Intel 2200 B \ G wireless network is working properly, I have the power settings adjusted upwards (maximum power consumption) because the thing is turned off by itself if I was just doing nothing on the internet, and I had to connect recover. I did this on the basis of what the PB FAQ told me. Afterwards no problems, the card works on any wireless network properly. PICTURE QUALITY The screen is great. So I'm going to buy a widescreen monitor for my desktop after experience with this type of screen. It reflects like a madman, but the viewing angle is very large, color fastness I feel very good, it is also minimal backlight good to use, and there is not a shred of games to be found (even though I do not play shooters). Ghosting The 16:9 format is just really nice DVD'tjes and serie'tjes look, and with ordinary dinegetjes more than useful. The screen does its work in 1280 at 800. Deer is a pity that some games (KOTOR 1 and 2, for example) do not support widescreen, it is very stretched so, and 1024 by 768 normally I do not like look. But there can be divided opinions about. The screen can be seen in good light directly on the screen in daylight is sufficient Position 2 (of 10). In sunlight, the screen is downright problematic and reflects it like crazy, but I've never seen a screen that did okay under the circumstances. I have a Sony X-black screen next put with the same specs but I could detect no difference, except that the Sony screen at max brightness is slightly brighter.STURDINESS build quality and just okay. Not crack, looks good and tidy unscrewed off, and feels solid but not too heavy. One drawback: the screen is flipped open a bit sensitive to motion, it vibrates limited merrily along with moving my college bench if someone shows a kick against the metal framepje three tables further. The USB port on the left hand (the other two are at the back) is a bit stiff when inserting the recipient of my Logitech V500 mouse orange. It is as aluminum-looking (but being plastic) cover on the top with closed screen is extremely sensitive to scratching. I already have a few scratches fat withdrawn by some papers on its top. Staples The remote does have already given up the ghost after being five times typically used: I have emailed PB and I get along with my new battery, I'm already two months already waiting. PB service sucks. NOISE The AC97 sound chip does its job. The boxes (with the bottom flap separate woofertje!) Produce decent sound a bit tinny and lack bass (which is fine replaced by the cheerful co-vibrating the rest of the laptop), but can not hard. The sound quality through the headphone output, however, is very good, pure and clear, without cracking, with a volume where my mp3 player "U" to say. I also use good Sony-caps before. I have the built-in microphone not yet been tested. ERGONOMICSstandard laptop keyboard. Normal hotkeys: WiFi, sound, screen brightness etc. Only no indication (slightly) for CAPS LOCK, and the like, what does surprise me, and I occasionally do wrong. (Edit: there are so called in) Absolutely no lights on the keyboard (or above). No numpad. The keys have to be a little too hard-pressed to make contact, but I'm used to it after two months, at the beginning I missed the first three keystrokes. The F-dabs must be very hard pressed. Conversely feel the dabs it to sound, and you can bet a lot with rams. The Synaptics touchpad is sometimes cures, and what is sensitive, especially the scroll area on the right side of the touchpad. I prefer a mouse anyway, so not a problem for me. The touchpad is not switched off (for power saving). HEAT AND NOISE A small 40 mm ventilator provides the cooling of the video card and processor. The thing strikes out too often, and that's just fine too: you can hear him clearly, even in softest position. I hear a fan sound if I keep my ear to the keyboard as the "main" fan is not running. I have not been able to locate where the sound is coming from, it sounds like a fan at very low speed. 's outtake on the side (left) and blows occasionally some fine hot air out. The laptop is not bothersome hot at the top (also quite not play after 5 pm), rather nice for cold-smoked fingertips. The Skorpio is not heard, not even during seek, only if you persist your ear against the flap. The original HDD was noisier, but it was close. Well, I've had times when the battery after gaming was so hot that he did not want to load, probably because there is a thermal protection on the first hour after cooling (the battery is flat against the video card, so it heats up) . MOBILITY AND BATTERY DURATION The laptop is fairly flat, and heavy only 2.8 pounds. My targus-bag has enough room for the thing with taking a lot of paperwork (be careful, because the silver gray cover scratches quickly). The charging time is the 60 watt charger empty to full three hours of complete without the flap on. I consider myself a bit long. The battery is also only 45 watts. (4000 Mah, 11.1 volts). Initially the thing did it out of the box 1.5 hours. After some tweaking (undervolten RM-clock, 0,748 volts @ 600 MHz and 1.1 volts @ 1600Mhz) and clear screen that have screwed lower Powerplay (ATI power save function) sharper to have established and to have replaced the HDD , and of course the battery a couple of good discharge to have the flap on the bios standing empty pen, I get almost 3 hours with normal use (WiFi on, full power). Ultimate in low-power mode (display minimal, minimal CPU, Powerplay minimal, WiFi off, burner) as I put it on the uni use 3 hours to pick up. Three quarters And with a shitty 45 watt accu'tje. I have an extra 4400 Mah battery ordered from PB, but I've been waiting two months, while delivery was a week .. The battery is found (unless you want to pay double) anywhere else. For service, you do not have to buy PB, the staff treat you as if you come from under a rock. It makes every conversation I have with PB for a customer or a whole lot more fun, you may need punches leave after a few minutes valves with those guys. PRICE Nowhere could I find a laptop with these specs for 800 Euros (if you free bag no longer recognized) There also is staff discount, but the fact remains that this gem is now two months I enjoy using it, and the little machine to all my demands, indeed, surpasses my expectations. I think 996 Euro is also a decent price for this laptop. I'm at least very happy with it, even with the weak standard HDD and the long lead times of PB meegrekend is a topding for the money. I'm at least very happy with it, even with the weak standard HDD and the long lead times of PB meegrekend is a topding for the money. So far this Product Survey, which was my first review was for tweakers and my second post here Since I am a member. 4 hours in sitting down (I do not rap so fast), I hope you to have some. Updates on the mic and the TV output and tuner etc can be expected. I will keep you informed.
